Australia’s Door-to-Door Economy Surges 269% in a Decade

Australia’s door-to-door economy has surged by 268.7% over the past decade, with Transport, Postal and Warehousing now the nation’s fastest-growing industry. Health Care and Social Assistance has also more than doubled, rising 205.4% nationally. Our latest internal analysis of 440,000 Australian businesses reveals a decisive shift towards personalised, service-led and in-home models.

Drawing on Honcho’s internal dataset spanning 2015 to 2025 and aligned with Australian Bureau of Statistics year-on-year registration trends, the study measures relative growth and contraction across industry sectors and subsectors nationwide. Industry classifications were standardised and aggregated at national and state levels to identify sector performance and geographic concentration.

Fastest and Slowest Growing Industries Nationwide

While overall business registrations have risen 2.5% year-on-year according to ABS data, our analysis shows a pronounced divide between expanding and contracting sectors. Mining and Public Administration remain stagnant, while service-driven industries continue to accelerate.

Within Transport, Postal and Warehousing, postal and courier pick-up and delivery services surged 612.6%, reflecting rising demand for personalised, door-to-door services across households and workplaces.

Businesses in Health Care and Social Assistance have more than doubled in size over the past decade. Growth has been driven by medical, allied health, social assistance and community-based support services responding to population growth and evolving service delivery models.

Miralda Ishkhanian, COO at Honcho, said, “This data underscores a shift in consumer behaviour and social changes in Australia. Businesses are increasingly built around delivering services directly to people’s homes, whether that’s goods, transport or care."

“At the same time, traditional in-person and goods-based models are facing new pressures from digital platforms and global competition. It highlights how quickly consumer expectations are evolving and how new Australian businesses are adapting in response.”

She added, “Demand for door-to-door services has grown significantly in recent years. Increased remote work and policy initiatives that support older Australians to remain living at home are driving greater need for services delivered directly to households, including courier services, mobile care providers, and in-home support services.”

Meanwhile, Manufacturing and Wholesale Trade have contracted by a combined 45%, alongside declines in Information Media and Telecommunications, Professional Services, and Rental and Real Estate Services. The data reflects sustained movement away from traditional goods-based and intermediary sectors towards digitally enabled models.
